Admission to Master of Music degree at Sam Houston State University

Admission
Students seeking admission to the graduate program in music must submit the Graduate Studies Application for Admission with the one-time application fee to the Office of Graduate Studies, official transcripts of all college-level work (including the transcript that shows the date the undergraduate degree was conferred), and official GRE scores. In addition, the following are required:
Students must submit all required School of Music application materials, including three letters of recommendation. The School of Music application materials are available from the School of Music.
Students seeking admission as Performance or Conducting majors must pass an entrance audition administered by the appropriate faculty member or group of faculty members in the area of study. Students seeking admission for majors in Kodály Pedagogy, Theory/Composition, or Musicology must complete an admission interview with the appropriate faculty member or group of faculty members in the area of study.
A submission of scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required (including scores for the Graduate Music Diagnostic Exam – see below). For a final admissions decision, GRE scores do not constitute the sole criterion for consideration of the applicant, nor do GRE scores constitute the primary criterion to end consideration of an applicant. The applicant’s test scores will be compared with those of other applicants from similar socioeconomic backgrounds to the extent that those backgrounds can be properly determined and identified by the School of Music’s admissions process.
Transcripts from all previous college level academic work are required and should be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies. A bachelor’s degree in music or a demonstrated equivalent level of accomplishment is required. Students not possessing a bachelor’s degree in music which is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music will be evaluated through the Graduate Music Diagnostic Exam.
A final admissions decision is based upon an aggregate evaluation of all application components. No specific weight is assigned to any one factor

The curriculum for this professional degree program, with certification by the State of Illinois, is designed to provide outstanding preparation for the teaching of music in the primary and secondary school systems. Students may choose to work toward certification at the K-12 level with emphasis in either vocal or instrumental music.

Music students desiring to teach in the public schools must complete the Bachelor of Music Degree with a major in music education and the additional general education and professional education requirements for Teaching Certifications.

The study of music encourages students to explore the value of music in their lives. Students who study music at Saint Martin’s University have the advantage of a strong program in music within a liberal arts setting. Courses in music integrate the study of music literature, history and theory with musical performance as a means of developing intellect, familiarity with a variety of cultures, interpersonal relationships and poise.

The University’s music department offers a bachelor of arts degree, a minor and three State of Washington teacher certificate endorsements in music: choral, instrumental and general. Saint Martin’s is noted for small class sizes, rigorous education and a close working relationship with faculty members.

As part of the major, minor and endorsement courses of study, students are required to pass a functional keyboard proficiency examination. Students with prior piano training can meet this requirement by passing the piano proficiency examination. All other students will take applied piano instruction. After they have declared a major, minor or endorsement, music students also are required to participate in a major ensemble as well as applied lessons in their major instrument/voice each semester. Those students awarded music scholarships are required to be actively involved in the appropriate large and small performance ensembles within the music department and to maintain high academic standards.

Dedication to Excellence: Music majors, Music group majors, and Music minors are required to participate in at least one of the following during each academic semester: Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, or Choir. The Music Department also offers the Jazz and Pep Bands as well as a Vocal Jazz Ensemble. The Band and Choir Programs offer a variety of musical experiences and are open to qualified students regardless of their majors. All ensembles perform regularly in concert on campus, and many have the opportunity to tour and perform for a variety of audiences. Performance scholarships are available to band and choir participants.

Hands-on Experience: The faculty at SJC encourages all of their students to pursue internships. Common internships in the Music Department include music business, student teaching, and music stores. SJC also offers private lessons for a variety of instruments and gets its students involved in music liturgy at local churches throughout Jasper County. Department of Music and Dance at Saint Gallen Hochschule Fur Angewandte Wissenschaften

The Department of Music and Dance (IMD) has its roots in traditional classical conservatory education. In recent years, IMD has developed exciting new programmes in jazz and dance. With this multi-disciplinary approach, IMD has established a uniquely innovative environment within Norwegian higher education. Approximately 180 students are active in bachelors, masters, and post-graduate programmes within the department.

Starting in the Fall 2008, the department is offering three performance focused bachelor programmes in dance, classical music, and jazz. Music students can choose between a 3-year bachelors in performance or an expanded 4-year programme with practical pedagogic education integrated into the third and fourth years. The 4-year bachelor programme in dance includes practical pedagogic education as a general requirement.

At the graduate level, a 2-year masters programme in classical music performance is offered, as well as a 1-year postgraduate programme (PRM) in music performance for soloists.

IMD also offers a broad spectrum of continuing higher education in instrumental and vocal performance, chamber music, composition and arranging, and a 1-year specialization in music production and recording.

Curricula
Audition: Admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Music program is conditional upon a successful live audition evaluated by members of the music faculty. The audition will consist of a performance of at least ten minutes’ length on the student’s major instrument or voice, showing a grasp of a variety of styles.

Candidates should contact the Department of Visual and Performing Arts for specific requirements for individual instruments and voice. A recording (on either CD or cassette tape) may be submitted if the candidate resides greater than 150 miles from St. Bonaventure University.

The audition dates for admission for the 2009-2010 academic year are Jan. 24, Feb. 14 and March 14, 2009. All auditions will be held between 1-4 p.m. in Room 211 of the Quick Center for the Arts. Download an Audition Form.

Concentrations: Within the major in music, students may also choose concentrations in Jazz and Contemporary Music or Music History.

Scholarship Information: A scholarship is awarded annually to up to two students who demonstrate outstanding musical talent and whose major is music. The value of the scholarship is $1,000 per semester for 8 (eight) consecutive semesters and is for full-time students only. The student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 and must remain a music major to continue to receive the scholarship.

The scholarship will be based on the student’s audition and will be announced by April 1, 2009. It should be noted that this scholarship would be in addition to any other academic scholarship for which the student may be eligible.

Music students receive a comprehensive education in their field, including study in music theory, conducting, music education, music history and literature, music theatre, liturgical music, and all areas of applied performance studies. Each student also specializes in piano, organ, guitar, voice, or an orchestral instrument.

Two music degrees are offered at St. Ambrose–a bachelor of arts with a major in music and a bachelor of music education.

The bachelor of arts degree in music is tailored to students who intend to continue their studies in graduate school, pursue a music-related career, or perform professionally. Within this program, students with special interests are encouraged to develop individualized fields of study. Professors and students work together to design program in any number of specialized areas, including liturgical music, music business, music therapy and arts management.

The bachelor of music education degree prepares students to teach band, orchestra, chorus and general music in grades K-12. Music education majors work one-on-one with faculty ensemble directors, and they also conduct in public performances–opportunities not available at many schools.

For successful participation in the courses Palestrinasatz, bass, instruments, scores are basic piano playing is essential.
