The Department of Music and Dance (IMD) has its roots in traditional classical conservatory education. In recent years, IMD has developed exciting new programmes in jazz and dance. With this multi-disciplinary approach, IMD has established a uniquely innovative environment within Norwegian higher education. Approximately 180 students are active in bachelors, masters, and post-graduate programmes within the department.
Starting in the Fall 2008, the department is offering three performance focused bachelor programmes in dance, classical music, and jazz. Music students can choose between a 3-year bachelors in performance or an expanded 4-year programme with practical pedagogic education integrated into the third and fourth years. The 4-year bachelor programme in dance includes practical pedagogic education as a general requirement.
At the graduate level, a 2-year masters programme in classical music performance is offered, as well as a 1-year postgraduate programme (PRM) in music performance for soloists.
IMD also offers a broad spectrum of continuing higher education in instrumental and vocal performance, chamber music, composition and arranging, and a 1-year specialization in music production and recording.
