The Performing Arts Department offers 3 distinct tracks for majors: Dance, Music and Theatre. A student selecting a performing arts major with an emphasis in dance, music, or theatre is required to take a sequence of courses which studies the similarities and differences among the performing arts, courses in the area of specific emphasis, and breadth courses in the other 2 areas. In each track the student studies the art form from the perspective of history and aesthetics, theory and practical application.
The Dance Emphasis
Prior dance experience is helpful, but not necessary.

The dance program seeks students with a passion to move, dance, and be creative. Dance majors and minors study modern dance and ballet technique, dance history, choreography, and criticism and analysis. African Dance, Ballet Folklorico, Jazz, Pointe, Tap, Pilates, and Yoga are offered to provide a wider range of technique, and students will enrich their knowledge further by taking classes in music and theatre. 22/122 Applied Dance
Studio instruction in various dance styles (ballet, jazz, modern, African, Ballet Folklorico) at the beginning and intermediate levels.
121 Dance History I
This course covers the development of dance from its roots in court dancing through the development of ballet to the beginning of the modern era. Students attend professional dance concerts in the Bay Area.
123 Dance History II
This course studies the development of modern dance from its roots in ballet to the innovations of the present. Prerequisite: 121
125 Dance in Performance
A course in dance analysis and criticism. Different aspects of dance as a performing art
A broad scope of career choices is open to women with leaderships skills who have the ability to think creatively and analytically. These are all skills honed by theatre majors. Many Saint Mary's graduates have gone on to join successful theatre companies, obtain teaching positions, or pursue graduate work in theatre.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Offers you carefully designed programs which provide a rich and wide range of musical learning and experience. We combine classroom study, discussion and lectures enhanced by technology with individual instruction, solo and ensemble performance, concert attendance and internships. The department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.
Saint Mary's now offers a minor in Dance. The dance minor complements current performing arts majors and provides more options for students in other majors. This 21-credit minor offers courses in dance techniques, dance history, dance composition, nutrition, voice and movement, and anatomy and kinesiology.
Irish Dance Track
Saint Mary's is also offering an Irish dance track - the only university-associated program in the country - which will prepare students for the certification needed to teach Irish dance.
