Minor in Music at Saint Xavier University
Music Minors
Students not enrolled in a music degree program may develop individual performance skills through instruction in voice or instruments. In addition, numerous opportunities are provided for qualified students to participate in a wide variety of performance organizations including: University Chamber Singers, University Women’s Ensemble, University Men’s Ensemble, or Opera Workshop, University Orchestra, University Concert Band, University Marching Band, University Pep Band Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Chamber Music. Non-music majors may apply credit earned in these courses towards the University “Literature and Fine Arts” Requirement.

This curriculum is designed to give students a broad education in music within the liberal arts setting. The focus of the degree is on the development of basic musicmanship, the ability to perform music and the development of a broad knowledge of the foundation and principles of music as an art form. The large number of electives in this major allow a student to complete a second major or carefully select additional music courses in order to pursue graduate level study in music.
Bachelor of Music in Performance
A four-year professional curriculum which emphasizes the development of creative skill and academic achievement as well as artistic performance. Students may choose to study voice, keyboard, guitar of any orchestral/band instruments.
Bachelor of Music in Performance students must complete the music core requirements along with the requirements of their major. Accredited: National Association of Schools of Music.

The jazz minor is a practical, creative and comprehensive concentration of courses which gives students significant training and exposure in theory, history and performance. Students who complete the entire minor will be well qualified to excel in jazz studies at an advanced level; others who choose to pursue a less concentrated path will enjoy a deeper awareness of the jazz idiom.Courses in jazz studies include: Jazz: American Creative Music, Basic Jazz Preparation, Techniques of Jazz Writing and Arranging, Techniques of Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Improvisational Workshop and Jazz Ensemble.
Saint Mary's now offers a minor in Dance. The dance minor complements current performing arts majors and provides more options for students in other majors. This 21-credit minor offers courses in dance techniques, dance history, dance composition, nutrition, voice and movement, and anatomy and kinesiology.
Irish Dance Track
Saint Mary's is also offering an Irish dance track - the only university-associated program in the country - which will prepare students for the certification needed to teach Irish dance.
