This degree is designed for a Type 10 certification in Music for all grades (K-12). Candidates for teacher certification in music must: Meet University of St. Francis requirements for Liberal Education and state certification. Music core requirements Vocal/Choral concentration requirements Meet professional education requirements Complete a minimum of 100 clock hours of pre-teaching experience in elementary and secondary classrooms for admission to student teaching.

Transfer students are warmly welcomed to the USF program, particularly those from National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredited programs.
Emphasis: Conducting majors will declare an emphasis for their studies in one of the following areas: literature and performance of (1) instrumental music or (2) choral music, and will concentrate on that specialization. A substantial portion of time also will be devoted to conducting in areas other than one's principal repertoire. A feature of the conducting program is regular tutorial sessions, given in conjunction with a significant amount of contact hours with the School's ensembles. The BA (non-teaching program) requires relatively few hours and may easily be combined with another degree program or minor (business or theology, for example). A graduate with these combined degrees might look at music business or church music as a career. The BA in Music (Certification in Music Education, Type 10, K-12) will prepare the musician to be a general music teacher or choral director in an elementary, middle, or high school. This major is intended for students interested in combining theoretical studies of musical structure with most of the requirements of the BM in applied music or composition or, more rarely, the BA in another academic area. Music theory majors take required lessons in faculty studios and participate in student ensembles. • Preliminary requirement: Applicants must submit a written paper with their application forms by the application deadline. Conducting majors are offered on the master's and doctoral levels. MM students with a major in choral conducting study choral literature and rehearsal techniques. The MM in instrumental conducting gives the aspiring conductor insights into the professional conductor's workshop. Not only are advanced technical problems dissected and discussed, but emphasis is placed on rehearsal technique and the relationship between technique and rehearsing.
