Emphasis:
Conducting majors will declare an emphasis for their studies in one of the following areas: literature and performance of (1) instrumental music or (2) choral music, and will concentrate on that specialization. A substantial portion of time also will be devoted to conducting in areas other than one's principal repertoire. A feature of the conducting program is regular tutorial sessions, given in conjunction with a significant amount of contact hours with the School's ensembles.

For conducting majors, two years beyond the master's degree must be in full-time residence. Please see
The BA (non-teaching program) requires relatively few hours and may easily be combined with another degree program or minor (business or theology, for example). A graduate with these combined degrees might look at music business or church music as a career.
The BA in Music (Certification in Music Education, Type 10, K-12) will prepare the musician to be a general music teacher or choral director in an elementary, middle, or high school. This program will be overseen jointly by the Fine Arts Department and the College of Education. State accreditation for this program is pending.

The Illinois Institute of Art–Chicago offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Digital Filmmaking & Video Production; Game Art & Design; Media Arts & Animation and Interactive Media Design that also includes general education courses. The degree program lasts four academic years (12 quarters or 132 weeks in length) and contains 180 quarter-credits, including 64 quarter-credits in general education.
