MISSION STATEMENT: The Department of Music at Northern State University serves as an instrument of the university for the stimulation and motivation of creative and artistic expression in music. A primary responsibility is to assist students in the discovery and development to their fullest potential. Students will be provided with many opportunities to develop through music classes, private instruction and participation in solo and ensemble performances. The Department of Music also offers supporting courses to students in other disciplines. This curriculum attracts students who desire the optimum preparation for their profession. Graduates with a music major or minor will be well-rounded in musicianship, pedagogy, music technology and performance.

References to music at Hampton Institute can be found as early as the 1870’s. Francis Greenwood Peabody writes in his book,
“The effect of the first ‘Spirituals’ as sung by a great body like the students of Hampton is a unique experience…such was the music which the Hampton Singers made familiar to northern audiences and through which set themselves to ‘sing up’ Virginia Hall.”

The Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) is an entry-level degree that prepares individuals for professional practice in the area of audiology. The program of study is designed to meet the minimum academic and clinical requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and state licensure, expose students to basic and applied research, provide practical and research experience, and develop skills in the use of evidence-based practice.
The Musical Theatre program in the School of Theatre Arts and Dance at the University of Northern Colorado is designed to provide undergraduate students possessing talents in voice, acting and dance with a professionally structured training program in the art and craft of musical theatre. The program focuses on developing each student's potential through a progressive series of classroom experiences and public performances.
We encourage serious young artists seeking a career in professional musical theatre to refine their talents in this rigorous training program developed, managed and taught by professionals in the areas of Theatre, Music, Dance and Musical Theatre.
