This new dance degree will focus on enabling students to become highly expressive and articulate dance theatre makers and scholars. Students will explore the potential for dance and movement to empower others and engage new audiences and participants. The course aims to foster each student’s individual creativity and skills and support their professional development.

The Music Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown allows students to explore the world of music within a liberal arts education. The music department offers courses in music theory, music history, popular music, and jazz history. Performing groups include the Concert Choir, the Concert Band and the Women’s Chorus. The curriculum of the department is designed to provide students an opportunity to increase performance skills, music literacy and critical thinking, both through performance and classroom instruction.

While the majority of the courses offered by the music department are geared toward general education, students wishing to study music more intensely may pursue a minor in music (see the Music Minor webpage for more details). A student who wishes to pursue a degree in music must relocate to the main campus to complete his/her undergraduate degree.

The major in Theatre includes a full complement of courses in acting, directing, stage lighting, theatre graphics, and repertory theatre. College productions give students an opportunity to demonstrate their craft in a variety of major presentations as well as in smaller or more experimental efforts.

Students interested in Theatre may choose to pursue a minor either to supplement the work in their majors or to fulfill the requirements for a related area within their majors. The minor in Theatre requires that students complete five courses for a total of 15 credits in addition to any THEA courses chosen to fulfill the requirements under General Education.

Complete two required classes:

MUSIC 0211 Introduction to Western Art Music
MUSIC 0411 Theory 1

Earn three credits in music performance by completing either:

MUSIC 0121 Classical Piano (one semester)
MUSIC 0610 Chorale (two semesters)

Complete two additional MUSIC courses, one of which must have a prerequisite.

Each course for the Music minor must be completed with a grade of C- or better.
