BA in Joint Honours Musical Theatre at Saint Martins College UK
Why study this course at the University of Cumbria?
This is a pathway through the exciting world of musical theatre and singing. The course centres on singing and musical theatre skills; and most importantly, you learn how to present a performance. We explore many styles of music theatre, from the most recent shows to the very earliest examples of the genre. Everyone can develop their own particular interest, and participate in large-scale productions. This is an exciting prospect for all lovers of musical theatre.
What is this course about?
You study musical theatre and practise performance skills with a special emphasis on singing. In the first year you are introduced to contemporary trends in musical theatre, looking at some of the more exciting developments in the West End and Broadway. You then study other musical genres, some in different cultures, and the history of musical theatre. The study of relevant theories and issues underpins your practical work. You have many opportunities to be involved in shows and develop your singing and performance techniques.
During the second year you work as a performer in two contrasting pieces—one musical theatre piece designed for performance in an orthodox theatre and one such piece created for a specific audience. At the end of the year you can choose either to go on a work placement or to negotiate your own performance or research project. This module is very flexible, allowing you to explore future careers.
In the final year, you perform in another two contrasting pieces—an original piece led by students and a piece led by a visiting practitioner. You conclude your theoretical work by researching and writing an extended essay on a subject of special interest within the area of musical theatre. Finally you prepare a personal portfolio.
This subject can be studied with Dance Performance, Drama Performance or Technical Theatre.
What do our students say?
“This pathway is a fun, enjoyable experience. We have the chance to explore lots of music theatre styles and, best of all we appear in at least three staff-directed productions.” 2006 graduate
What can the course lead to?
