The course introduces you to relevant theoretical approaches to Film Studies in order to broaden your knowledge of international film culture. A central component of the course is the opportunity for direct practical experience (through practice projects in short film-making and documentary), enabled by advanced digital editing suite facilities. A combination of historical, theoretical and cultural approaches informs teaching and learning through staff expertise in the fields of American, British, European and World cinema. Links are drawn between theory and industry practice, providing a strong awareness of contemporary film culture. You will also develop transferable skills through our student-led seminars.

This is a stimulating and exciting Joint degree course for those interested in film and theatre, who want to study both historical and contemporary film and theatre. A central component of the course is the opportunity to direct practical experience through practice film-making and theatre projects.
This exciting and demanding course is both practical and theoretical, involving production skills across a range of media, and the study of communications and media. As well as becoming media-literate, you will also learn how to carry out specific creative and managerial tasks within media production. The course also provides you with transferable skills such as the ability to acquire and analyse statistics, resourcefulness and teamwork.
Graduates move into media-related professions, including technical roles in media production, research, journalism, marketing and PR. Many work freelance or set up their own companies. Some also go on to further postgraduate study. Graduates have found work for companies such as Channel 4, CNBC and Sky as Runners, Assistant Producers, Media Planners, Researchers and Location Managers.

Most graduates enter the music industry and many enjoy careers rising to senior and influential positions in the industry, both in the UK and abroad. Graduates have found work as Guitar Makers, Piano Technicians and Piano Tuners.
During the first part of the course you produce a commercial, short documentary and short drama exercises which develop your imaginative, technical and craft skills. Extensive learning takes place through self-directed study. In the latter stages of the course, you will produce a final production project. Filmmaking is essentially a collaborative process and a strong commitment to teamwork is an integral part of this course.
A series of research seminars and lectures help you develop your creative, methodologies and evaluative skills. You also complete a case study analysis of a major contributor to the development of TV, film or animation
Graduates typically gain employment in the creative industries, or develop freelance filmmaking or artistic careers. Others have progressed in their current jobs with terrestrial or satellite broadcasters, international film production companies etc. by securing promotions through their increased knowledge and experience.
Many graduates have successfully set up their own production companies and/or have had their work screened at international festivals or events. You are encouraged to develop a showreel that targets a specified market for your work.
Suitable graduates are also encouraged to apply for practice-based Doctorates, thus contributing to the emerging and exciting research culture within the department.
