Minor in Music at Millsaps College

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Music is interwoven into the fabric of life at Millsaps. The Millsaps Singers is the oldest music performance organization at the College. Repertoire classes, honors recitals, solo recitals, choir and ensemble performances and master classes with visiting professionals and artists-in-residence are standard features of the program. Concentrations in church music and music performance (piano, voice, organ, guitar, or orchestral instruments) can be combined not just with a music major, but with any major Millsaps offers.

Millsaps Singers

The oldest music performance organization at the college is The Millsaps Singers. Membership in The Singers is open to all students by audition. Each year, this 70-voice choir performs a variety of accompanied and a cappella music for the college and community, and there is usually at least one performance with a professional orchestra. The Singers traditionally perform a fall concert, a Christmas concert, and a spring concert, showcasing a highly diverse repertoire — masterworks, international and ethnic works, and recent additions to the choral repertory. Academic credit is awarded for participation each semester. Singers also takes international tours-they went to England in 2003.

Millsaps Chamber Singers

The highly selective membership of the 16-24 voice Chamber Singers is drawn from the Millsaps Singers and each member of the group receives a scholarship for their service. Their repertoire centers on important sacred literature — both a capella and accompanied. In addition to concerts for United Methodist congregations in Mississippi, the choir takes annual national or international tours. Destination cities have included Chicago, Washington D.C., San Antonio, and Orlando. Past concert itineraries have featured international tours to Germany, the Czech Republic, and Austria. Most recently, the Singers toured Spain and Portugal in May 2002.

Degree in Music at Mills College

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

For well over half a century, the Music Department at Mills College has enjoyed an international reputation. Because of its strong faculty and history of innovation, the department is in a unique position to enable its students to participate in some of the most exciting areas of development for music making in our time. All music students at Mills, whether they are music majors, music minors, or those who simply wish to take music courses, benefit from this stimulating, creative atmosphere.
The curricular emphasis of the Music Program is twofold:
First, in keeping with the liberal arts mission of the College, courses for non-majors not only expose students to a wide variety of styles and repertory, but also place musical activity within the broader context of intellectual history and global culture.
Second, the Music Department offers a unique undergraduate major in music that promotes a dynamic interaction between performance and improvisation, historical and theoretical studies, composition, and music technology. The music student at Mills also learns that Western musical culture is only one of the world’s many musical traditions—a fact accentuated by the cultural diversity of the Bay Area as well as its position on the Pacific Rim.

The music major revolves around a core curriculum of music history, theory, and performance that provides knowledge and skills basic to all musicians. In addition, music majors select one of four areas of emphasis: performance, theory/history, composition, or composition with an emphasis in media technology or electronic music. Performance students work with top San Francisco Bay Area musicians and perform in various musical groups, such as the Early Music, Performance Collective (Chamber), Vocal, Gamelan, Kongolese Drumming, Music Improvisation, and Contemporary Performance Ensembles. Our program in composition provides undergraduate women the opportunity to assume roles in music technology, recording engineering, and composition that have traditionally been inaccessible to them.
All music students at Mills can also work at Mills’ Center for Contemporary Music, a world-renowned facility for electronic and computer music that has played an influential role in the development of contemporary musical culture and is an important link in a long tradition of musical innovation at Mills.
Finally, just as all musical activities should be interrelated, music should not be isolated from other disciplines in the arts, humanities, and sciences. The Music Department therefore offers several interdisciplinary courses and is committed to creating interdisciplinary programs that fit the needs of students with special interests.

Major in Music Ministry at Milligan College

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

The music ministry minor fits well with numerous majors. The study of music ministry may serve to foster students’ avocational interests as well as prepare them for more concentrated music studies in the future.

MUSC 143 Basic Music Theory/Ear Training (3 hrs)
MUSC 144 Basic Music Theory/Ear Training (3 hrs)
MUSC 363 Basic Conducting (3 hrs)
MUSC 365 Music History Survey (3 hrs)
MUSC 454 Music and Worship Methods (3 hrs)
MUSC 491 Practicum in Music Ministry (1 hr)
Ensemble for 4 hours (.5 to 1.5 hrs per ensemble per semester)

Applied Music:
Principal concentration for a minimum of 3 semesters (1.5 hrs)
Secondary concentration for a minimum of 2 semesters (1 hr)
Concert attendance for 4 semesters (attending 4 concerts/semester)

Either the principal or the secondary applied area for all music minors must be piano.

Music minors with a principal area of concentration in percussion, brass, or woodwinds may satisfy two semester hours of the ensemble requirement with Jazz Ensemble (if instrumentation appropriate), and two semester hours in Johnson City Community Concert Band (Civic Band). For all voice minors, participation in Concert Choir or Milligan Women’s Chorale fulfills the ensemble requirement. For string minors, participation in Orchestra fulfills the ensemble requirement. Ensemble requirements for students whose principal applied area is guitar will be determined on an individual basis by the applied instructor and ensemble directors. Participation in choral or instrumental ensembles fulfills the ensemble requirement for all students whose principal applied area is keyboard.

Concert and recital attendance is required of all music minors for four semesters (attending four concerts per semester). Failure to meet all recital attendance requirements results in a half a letter grade (5 points) reduction in every music class final average for the semester.
